transcripts will be required upon hire. Job Purpose Statement : The
High School Choral and Instrumental Music Teacher is responsible
for providing outstanding choral and instrumental music education
across a wide variety of musical ensembles, genres, and styles. The
Music Teacher must have strong foundational skills in both
instrumental and vocal technique and be able to demonstrate
competence on a primary instrument, demonstrate basic
piano/accompaniment skills, and demonstrate basic vocal technique.
The Music Teacher must work collaboratively with district music
staff to create vertically aligned and integrated programs of
instruction and work with parents and community members to support
musical excellence, creativity, and student musical autonomy. The
Music Teacher will be responsible for directing and supporting a
variety of ensembles and performance opportunities, which may
include concert band, jazz band, choir, chamber ensembles, pep
band, and other co-curricular performance groups. Experience
supporting or directing marching band and pep band activities is
desired. Experience with or willingness to support a Mariachi
ensemble is preferred in order to expand culturally responsive
music opportunities for students. The Music Teacher will be
responsible for selecting age- and level-appropriate literature for
jazz, concert, pop, marching, chamber, and spirit ensembles, and
will demonstrate an understanding of music technology, including
notation, recording, and sound reinforcement software and hardware.
The HRVHS Music Teacher works to develop students’ music
appreciation and musical skills through implementing
district-approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student
progress, activities, and outcomes; developing engaging lesson
plans; addressing the diverse educational needs of students; and
providing a safe and optimal learning environment. The teacher
instructs and supervises a diverse group of students by
establishing a positive and respectful learning environment,
providing varied learning opportunities, and promoting high
standards of performance for all students regardless of their
backgrounds or developmental levels. The teacher also provides
ongoing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding
student progress, expectations, and program goals. Essential Job
Functions: Motivates students to work towards musical excellence
through innovative literature, rehearsal techniques, collaborative
ensembles, and performances. Strives to promote equality and
diversity throughout the entire music program. Communicates with
students, parents, staff members, community members and the media
in all matters relating to the music program, in both written and
verbal forms. Use of the web and social media as it relates to
communication and promotion is an essential skill. Schedules
performances in coordination with other school and district events.
Manages equipment (including instruments, uniforms, sound
reinforcement, etc), music library, and rehearsal facilities.
Promotes and Facilitates musical autonomy in students through the
use of sectionals, student-driven ensembles, and student organized
performances at school and in the community. Develops and
implements curriculum that aligns with State and National Arts
Standards. Integrates use of critical musical technologies
(notation, recording, composing, etc) into rehearsal, individual
instruction, and performance. Maintains regular and predictable
attendance to meet the needs of the students and the expectations
of the district. Maintains good relationships with other music
staff and works to ensure vertical alignment of curriculum,
retention between middle and high school, etc. Works closely with
music directors in the mid-Columbia area, and with private music
teachers. Ensures that all musicians are academically eligible for
OSAA sanctioned contests. Coordinates performances at the school,
in the community, and around the region. Meets regularly with
parents and creates an online community in support of music.
Responds to musical needs of students through independent and
ensemble instruction that considers a wide variety of levels and
learning styles. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with
students, staff and parents and resolves conflict in a professional
manner. Assists student musicians in preparing for post-secondary
music opportunities, auditions, honor bands and choirs, and
festival competitions. Professionally represents the school, music
program and the District in interactions with students, parents,
community members, and League and State music authorities
(including OSAA) and maintains membership in NafME, OMEA, OCDA,
ABDA, etc. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours
as required. Develops and maintains a budget each year to cover the
required expenditures necessary to conduct the music program. Works
with the principal. Manages work time effectively, which will
include numerous evening and weekend activities. Other Job
Functions: Perform duties in a courteous and efficient manner that
builds the confidence of staff, students and the public in the Hood
River County School District and enhances learning. Observe laws,
district policies and procedures, and professional standards for
this position. Work effectively and collaboratively with diverse
student, parent and community populations Carry out work
responsibilities with strong organizational skills, effectively
under pressure of deadlines, difficult situations, interruptions,
and new or emergency conditions. Respect confidential information
and the privacy of students, staff and parents. Collect, record,
store, retrieve, assimilate, organize and utilize information and
records electronically and by using traditional methods. Develop
job skills necessary to meet changes in the position. Maintain
personal appearance and hygiene appropriate to the position as
defined by the district. Meet applicable district physical
ability/health and safety guidelines for the position. Performs
other related duties as assigned. Experience Required: Recent
teaching experience in both instrumental and choral music, or
outstanding recommendations from supervising teachers. Licenses,
Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Skills, Knowledge
and/or Abilities Required: Knowledge of the rules, policies and
regulations of the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA),
Oregon Department of Education (ODE), Federal and State Title IX
Law and school and district policies. Candidates must have
knowledge of the support and developmental needs of a comprehensive
music program; an ability to develop and manage a budget, strong
verbal and written communication skills and candidates must
understand the Oregon State and National Arts Standards.
Additionally, strong organization skills and attention to detail
are necessary. Candidates must possess piano skills relevant to
accompanying advanced level choral music. Bilingual English/Spanish
preferred License Required: Possess and maintain a valid Oregon
Teaching License with Music Education endorsement Testing: Any
offer of employment made by Hood River County School District to an

to a standard teaching contract, three Extra Duty Contracts are
available for Music (Instrumental); Music (Pep Band); and Music
(Vocal). The Salary Range listed below is for the 2025/26 school
year. The Licensed Salary schedule is being negotiated this spring.
