    The Senior Materials Engineer will develop, process, and test materials to be used in production. Based on data gathered and expertise, the Senior Materials Engineer will also identify and recommend the most appropriate materials for specific applications. This position involves the setup of new production/manufacturing systems/processes and the analyses of current systems/processes to establish sustainability. Works on problems where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Builds productive working relationships internally and externally. This position may train Technicians and other Engineers on the systems/processes of the department. A keen analytical mind that can combine theoretical understanding with the results of experiments is key to success in this role.


    Requires BS degree in Engineering, Materials Science is preferred.
    Requires 10+ years' of related professional Engineering experience (material, chemical and/or semiconductor processing highly desirable). 5+ years' experience with crystal growth.
    Hands-on mechanical and analytical experience.
    Experience with materials characterization and analytical techniques (ex: XRD, SEM, optical microscopy, etc.) and hands-on mechanical and analytical experience is required. A high degree of expertise in at least a few of these techniques is preferred.
    Ability to manage multiple projects and follow through on process improvement procedures.
    Knowledge of ceramics or semiconductor material processing and properties is preferred.
    Knowledge of SPC, FMEA, Lean and Six Sigma Principles is helpful.
    Must be proficient in MS Office Suite and other data analytics tools.
    Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills to interface with outside vendors and to generate and deliver presentations to internal customers.

  • Develops, implements, oversees and maintains methods; operation sequence and processes in the manufacture of final product.
  • Oversees the starting, running, and upgrading of manufacturing processes to maximize productivity without sacrificing quality requirements.
  • Designs and commissions new production processes and tools as they relate to material. Hands-on knowledge and design experience is beneficial in creating work instructions and training aids.
  • Creates work instructions and other associated process documentation following documented procedures.
  • Makes sure that all production personnel correctly understand all new processes or any changes in processes. Will train production operators on new processes as are developed.
  • Analyzes problems and addresses RCCAAs using intuitive and analytical methods such as 8-D & 5 Why Analyses.
  • Makes observations and takes measurements directly, as well as collects and interprets data from existing product lines.
  • Takes ownership of projects and manages results from cradle to grave with guidance from Senior Engineering/Management.
  • Networks with other department personnel (including other engineers and supervisors) to tackle procedural and quality issues that are related to the production and delivery of good quality product.
  • Selects, manages, and works with sub-contractors as needed. Works closely with EHS. Translates customer specs into quality processes and production needs based on quality controls.
  • May participate in drawing and specification review. May create inspection and test plans for new materials. May review calibration tools and practices related to material constraints.
  • Reviews customer requests related to testing and provides support to process engineering in any material quality issue or defect.
  • Collaborates with appropriate production and process staff to understand the material specifications sought for a particular application or product.
  • Identifies, selects, and recommends materials based on several key factors.
  • Measures performance of various materials in accordance with specifications.
  • Observes or participates in product testing process as appropriate.
  • When a material fails, gathers data and analyzes the reasons why the material did not meet specifications.
  • Reports testing results to material producer; identifies when applicable the reasons the selected material did or did not fulfill desired specifications.
  • Collaborates with process engineers as part of a development and fabrication team to create a new material when none of the suggested materials meet specifications.
  • Adhere to and enforce safety and health regulations associated with production.
  • May train other Engineers and/or Technicians on the systems/processes of the department.
