Summary:
The Telecommunications function provides engineering, design, and field support for BPA s telecommunication facilities and associated equipment. This includes fiber optics, analog/mobile radio, digital radio, power line carrier, operational telephone, microwave towers and antennas, emergency AC/DC power and UPS systems, communications buildings, multiplex equipment, and monitoring systems including alarm system, Fault Locating Acquisition Reporter (FLAR), microwave monitor, wide area networks used for operational data and network management.

Education & Applicable Fields:
Bachelor s or Associate s degree in Electronic Engineering or a closely related field is preferred.

Education & Experience Requirements:
Level 3
" With an applicable Bachelor s Degree, 10 years of experience is required.
" With an applicable Associate s Degree, 12 years of experience is required.
" Without a degree, 14 years of work experience in a technical/engineering environment is required.

Typical Tasks may include but are not limited to:
Electronic Engineering Technician - Telecommunications tasks may include assisting in the engineering, design of assigned projects. Provides professional engineering technician expertise in assisting project managers and other engineering personnel in implementing projects, supporting field maintenance crews, and other related engineering activities.
" Participate on teams to research and test telecommunication and related equipment.
" Assist in development of requirements for technical specifications for procurement of telecommunications systems and equipment, and provide technical support in the administration of material contracts and turnkey system contracts.
" Prepare detailed design, material, or procurement specifications for equipment, ensuring that technical tradeoffs have been considered and that decisions conform to existing policies and standards and are within budgetary constraints.
" Prepare engineering designs or assist in developing engineering requirements for the development, installation and modification of BPA facilities.
" Provide technical support to construction, operations and maintenance personnel.
" Assist in procurement of electronic parts or materials and maintain inventory and related documentation.
" Read wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, or engineering instructions for assembling electronics units, applying knowledge of electronic theory and components.
" Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions, working with manufacturers or field representatives as necessary to procure replacement parts.
" Test electronics units, using standard test equipment, and analyze results to evaluate performance and determine need for adjustment.
" Adjust or replace defective or improperly functioning circuitry or electronics components, using hand tools or soldering iron.
" Assemble, test, or maintain circuitry or electronic components, according to engineering instructions, technical manuals, or knowledge of electronics, using hand or power tools.
" Perform preventative maintenance or calibration of equipment or systems.
" Maintain system logs or manuals to document testing or operation of equipment.
" Provide customer support and education, working with users to identify needs, determine sources of problems, or to provide information on equipment use.
" Write reports or record data on testing techniques, laboratory equipment, or specifications to assist engineers.
" Provide education and training to other technicians and other organizational personnel on processes, documentation, equipment use, systems, or other assigned engineering activities.

Note: Final drafts, documents or other products must be reviewed and approved by a BPA Federal employee with the authority to do so.
