POSITION TITLE: Senior Fiber Laser Component Product Engineer

POSITION DUTIES: Oversees and guides the innovation and development of fiber-based technology programs to ensure optimal fiber-based optical component product solutions. Provides leadership in all aspects of the product life cycle involving fiber-based technology, including, but not limited to, system architecture, performance metrics, costs, and schedules to enable product realization of next-generation fiber lasers at nLIGHT. Provides active/passive fiber component manufacturing and usage expertise as needed across the company. Defines NPI (New Product Introduction) project schedules, design-oriented elements, including specifications, product/design FMEAs, DFX, qualification plans, drawings, test requirements, and interfaces. Manages complex tradeoffs that span multiple functional areas to realize the best possible product. Drives focus on the technical details of products, ranging from initial designs to volume production issues to end of life management. Collaborates with development and manufacturing engineering teams to determine development and build schedules. Works with finance to estimate program and project costs including ROIs and establish product costs through detailed yielded BOMs. Works with buyer/planners to identify key vendor engagement regarding BOM costs, material cost reduction targets, vendor qualifications, and piece part design trade-offs. Leads improvements in reliability based on FA of external RMAs and internal NCMs establishing root cause failures and appropriate corrective actions. Reviews production data (e.g., yield, cycle time, DL hours, BOM cost) across entire manufacturing process to facilitate continuous improvement plans. Collaborates on product roadmaps that promote the investigation and application of new technologies to meet forecasted industry demands. Ensures shipped products meet cost, performance specifications, reliability, and quality goals. Develops and maintains business processes using self-developed tools to enable and support stable production processes and data integrity. Analyzes data trends and patterns to inform future product specifications. Travel up to 10% of time to manufacturing sites and vendor locations in the U.S. and abroad.

MINIMUM

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field, or the foreign degree equivalent.
  • 5 years of progressive, post baccalaureate engineering experience in the development, production, and operation of fiber-based optical components with diverse applications, including five years of experience in each of the following:
  • Solving complex problems in high order multi-dimensional spaces.
  • Direct management of a team
  • Active/Passive fiber optic manufacturing processes
  • Quality control processes
  • Data analysis software such as MiniTab, JMP or equivalent

Must possess six sigma green belt certification or above.
