Job Description:
Summary:
This position serves as a Land Surveyor reporting directly to the
Mapping Team Lead within the Surveying and Mapping Department. The
Surveying and Mapping Department is responsible for providing land
survey and mapping support in the maintenance, operation and
development of new BPA facilities. This position involves mostly
office work in the Vancouver, Washington, Van Mall Complex but
occasionally may require some overnight out of town travel. Makes
exact measurements and determines property boundaries. Provides
data relevant to the shape, contour, gravitation, location,
elevation, or dimension of land or land features on or near the
earth's surface for engineering, mapmaking, mining, land
evaluation, construction, and other purposes.
Education & Applicable Fields:
Associates or Bachelor s degree in Land Surveying or Civil
Engineering or a directly related discipline is preferred.
Education & Experience Requirements:
" Level 2:
o 8 - 10 years of Land Surveyor experience is required.
o Land-Surveyor-in-training license is required.
o Knowledge of professional surveying practices and procedures;
state and federal laws affecting land surveying and boundaries is
required.
Typical Tasks may include:

and approved by a BPA Federal employee with
the authority to do so.
" Verify the accuracy of survey data including measurements and
calculations conducted at survey sites.
" Search legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain
information about property boundaries in areas to be surveyed.
" Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines,
and other characteristics of terrain.
" Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal
descriptions of surveys to describe and document work
performed.
" Facilitate or conduct surveys to establish legal boundaries for
properties, based on legal deeds and titles.
" Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots,
maps, records, and documents related to surveys.
" Write descriptions of property boundary surveys for use in deeds,
leases, or other legal documents.
" Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data to
determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and
topographic features.
" Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and
boundaries in survey areas using theodolites, transits, levels, and
satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).
" Record the results of surveys including the shape, contour,
location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land features.
" Enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in
written or electronic/magnetic form.
Specific Tasks may include:
" Provide professional guidance regarding boundaries, titles and
legal descriptions to subordinates, real property service staff and
other interested parties within the agency.
" Decipher and interpret vague title policies and legal
descriptions. Analyze and resolve complex boundary surveys, creates
legal descriptions used to acquire real property rights for BPA
facilities.
" Proficient with computer drafting, particularly Bentley
Microstation and other Bentley products.
" Must have good working knowledge of GIS and process the ability
to maintain data bases and ensure data quality through the use of
automated and manual techniques to create, edit and process data
sets.
" Research BPA, BLM, and state, county and city records for
information concerning BPA rights-of-way.
" As a Professional Surveyor, check and review Records of Survey,
Boundary Line Adjustments, Partition Plats and other official
documents to be recorded at various federal, state and county
government offices. These maps and documents have been produced by
licensed professional land surveyors under contract to BPA.
" Thoroughly inspect and check deliverables for accuracy and
correctness; Deliverables include field note sheets, electronic
data collection files, computation sheets, transmission line plan
and profile maps.

" Must have a working knowledge of spherical and plane coordinate
systems that reference standard horizontal and vertical datum s
within North America.
" Have knowledge of laws affecting land surveying and
boundaries.
" Have the ability to work as part of a team consisting of
professional and technical staff.
" Have the ability to multi-task and work independently with a
minimal amount of supervision.
" Written and oral communication skills; interpersonal skills
useful in establishing and maintaining effective working
relationships
" Ability to organize and prioritize assignments
" Proficient user knowledge of MS Office
" Provide information to managers, co-workers, and peers by
telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.

plant, animal & life.
" Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents,
government regulations, executive orders, and agency rules.
" Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics,
and their applications.
" Knowledge of business and management principles involved in
strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership technique,
production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
" Geography - Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people
or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs
and benefits.
" Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses
of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to
problems.
" Understand the implications of new information for both current
and future problem-solving.
" Understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related
documents.
" Ability to choose the correct mathematical methods or formulas to
